Hair Extension Aftercare Guide

Beautiful hair extensions deserve beautiful care.

At Foxy Hair Extensions, we want you to enjoy your new hair for as long as possible. Following the correct aftercare routine is essential for maintaining the appearance, condition and longevity of your extensions, while also protecting your natural hair.

Please read our aftercare advice carefully and contact your stylist if you have any questions.

Washing Your Hair Extensions

We recommend washing your hair extensions approximately 1–2 times per week, depending on your scalp, lifestyle and individual requirements.

Excessive washing, styling and exposure to unsuitable products can reduce the lifespan of extension hair.

Before washing:

  • Thoroughly detangle your hair using a suitable hair extension brush.

  • Always brush gently, starting at the ends and working upwards.

  • Support your extensions at the roots to avoid unnecessary tension.

During washing:

  • Wash your hair upright, preferably in the shower. Avoid tipping your head forward over a bath or sink.

  • Apply Foxy Hair Shampoo, gently smoothing the product down the lengths rather than rubbing the hair together.

  • Carefully cleanse your scalp and between the attachment areas without pulling or tangling your extensions.

  • Rinse thoroughly to ensure no product residue remains.

  • Apply conditioner from the mid-lengths to the ends, avoiding bonds, tapes and attachment areas.

For additional nourishment, we recommend our Hair Extension Boost treatment approximately every 1–2 weeks, as appropriate for your hair.

After washing:

Gently squeeze away excess water and pat your hair dry with a towel. Never rub, twist or vigorously towel-dry your extensions.

If you live in a hard-water area, a suitable shower filter may help reduce mineral exposure.

Drying & Styling

Correct drying and heat protection are essential for maintaining the condition and longevity of your hair extensions.

Never leave your attachment areas damp for prolonged periods.

  • Heat protectant must be applied before every use of heated styling tools, including hairdryers, straighteners and curling tools.

  • Apply Foxy Hair Thermal Protection Serum to the lengths of your extensions before blow-drying or heat styling.

  • Gently detangle using a suitable extension brush or wide-tooth comb, supporting the attachment areas.

  • Always dry your roots and attachment areas first, ensuring they are completely dry.

  • Once the roots are thoroughly dry, continue drying the lengths.

  • Work in sections, directing the airflow downwards to help achieve a smooth, polished finish.

  • Avoid excessive heat and repeated styling at high temperatures, particularly on blonde and heavily processed extension hair.

  • Never apply straighteners or curling tools directly to bonds, tapes or other attachment points.

Always ensure your extensions are completely dry before going to bed.

Daily Hair Extension Care

A consistent daily routine will help prevent tangling, matting and unnecessary damage.

  • Brush your extensions regularly using a suitable hair extension brush.

  • Gently separate attachment areas as instructed by your stylist to prevent neighbouring sections from tangling together.

  • Always support the roots when brushing.

  • Avoid tight ponytails, buns and hairstyles that place excessive tension on the attachments.

  • Before sleeping, secure your hair in a loose braid or another style recommended by your stylist.

  • Consider using a silk or satin pillowcase or bonnet to reduce friction overnight.

  • Never sleep with wet extensions.

  • Keep oils, heavy conditioners and styling products away from attachment areas unless your stylist advises otherwise.

Regular trimming can also help keep the ends looking neat and healthy.

Hair Extension Lifespan

The lifespan of hair extensions depends on several factors, including hair colour, processing, daily styling, aftercare products, water quality and environmental exposure.

As a general guide for our Russian pre-bonded extension hair:

Blonde shades: Up to 9 months.

Darker shades: Up to 12 months.

These are maximum guideline lifespans, not guaranteed durations. Some clients will need replacement hair sooner depending on the condition of their extensions.

Lighter shades generally undergo more processing and may require additional care.

Important: Holidays, incorrect product use, excessive heat, hard water, swimming and inadequate aftercare can all prevent extensions from reaching their expected lifespan.

From approximately 24 weeks of wear, your stylist will assess the condition of your extension hair at each refit and advise whether it remains suitable for further use.

Hair will only be refitted where we consider its condition appropriate.

Hair Extension Maintenance & Refit Appointments

Professional maintenance and timely refitting are essential for protecting your natural hair and keeping your extensions comfortable and secure.

Your stylist will recommend an appointment schedule based on your extension method, natural hair, growth rate and individual requirements.

Russian Bonds / Pre-Bonded Extensions

Full refit: Approximately every 12 weeks.

At your refit, your existing extensions will be removed, your natural hair assessed and suitable extension hair prepared for reapplication.

Six-week maintenance appointments are not routinely required for every client.

Your stylist may recommend an interim maintenance appointment if your natural hair, attachment placement or individual circumstances make additional care necessary.

This may include checking attachment areas, rotating bonds in delicate sections or addressing specific concerns.

If your stylist has not recommended six-week maintenance, you do not need to book it as a standard appointment.

An interim maintenance appointment does not replace your full refit.

Weave Extensions

Maintenance and reapplication: Approximately every 6 weeks.

Weaves require regular professional attention to accommodate natural hair growth and maintain secure, comfortable placement.

Your stylist will advise on the appropriate schedule for your particular application.

Tape Extensions

Recommended refit interval: Every 8 weeks.

Tape extensions should be professionally removed and refitted approximately every eight weeks to accommodate natural hair growth and maintain secure, comfortable attachment placement.

Your stylist will assess your natural hair and extensions at each appointment and advise if an earlier refit is necessary.

Maintaining your recommended refit schedule is important for protecting your natural hair and keeping your extensions looking their best.

Booking With Your Regular Stylist

For continuity of care, we kindly ask that you book your maintenance and refit appointments with your usual stylist wherever possible.

Your stylist understands your extension history and can monitor the condition of your natural hair and extension hair throughout your appointments.

When Do I Need New Hair?

Hair extensions are not suitable for indefinite reuse.

Your stylist will assess the condition of your extensions at each refit, considering factors such as dryness, tangling, shedding, breakage, discolouration and overall hair quality.

If the hair is no longer in a suitable condition, we will recommend replacing it rather than refitting extensions that may not deliver the results you expect.

Our priority is always the health of your natural hair and the quality of your finished result.

Holidays, Sun Exposure & Swimming

Holidays can be particularly challenging for hair extensions.

Sun exposure, chlorine, salt water, humidity, sun cream and changes in water quality can affect the colour, condition and longevity of extension hair.

Potential issues include:

  • Discolouration or staining, including green, pink or orange tones.

  • Excessive dryness and tangling.

  • Matting caused by environmental exposure.

  • Weakening or deterioration of extension attachments.

We strongly advise avoiding swimming while wearing permanent hair extensions wherever possible.

If you are travelling abroad, please discuss your plans with your stylist before your appointment.

Clip-in hair extensions may be a more practical alternative for some holidays.

Damage caused by environmental exposure or incorrect aftercare may not be covered by our additional hair guarantee. Your statutory consumer rights remain unaffected.

Colouring, Colour Fade & Toning

Colour fade is a natural and expected characteristic of human hair extensions.

Just like your natural hair, extensions can gradually change in tone over time due to washing, heat styling, UV exposure, environmental factors and everyday wear.

Blonde and lighter shades can be particularly susceptible to changes in tone.

To help maintain your desired shade, Foxy Hair Extensions offers a professional in-salon toning service, allowing our stylists to refresh the colour of your extensions where suitable.

We recommend consulting your stylist before using any colouring or toning products on your extensions.

  • Do not attempt to lighten or bleach your extensions.

  • Avoid using purple shampoo, silver shampoo or colour-depositing products unless specifically advised by your stylist.

  • Do not apply home colouring products or chemical treatments without professional guidance.

  • Always consult your Foxy stylist before arranging root colouring or other chemical services while wearing extensions.

Professional toning is subject to the condition and suitability of the extension hair, and results may vary depending on its existing colour and processing history.

Colour fade alone is not necessarily an indication of a manufacturing fault. Any concerns about unusual or premature colour changes will be assessed individually, without affecting your statutory consumer rights.

Hair Extension Removal

Hair extensions should always be professionally removed.

Never attempt to remove bonds, tapes or wefts yourself.

Incorrect removal can cause unnecessary pulling, breakage and damage to your natural hair.

As a general guide:

  • Pre-bonded / Russian bonds: Full refit or removal at approximately 12 weeks.

  • Weaves: Reapplication at approximately 6 weeks.

  • Tapes: Refit or removal at approximately 8 weeks.

Your stylist may recommend earlier removal or refitting where necessary.

Clip-In Hair Extension Aftercare

Clip-in extensions require a slightly different routine from permanently fitted extensions.

We recommend washing clip-in extensions only when necessary, generally after several wears or when product build-up becomes noticeable.

Washing your clip-ins:

  1. Gently detangle from the ends upwards before washing.

  2. Hold the extensions securely by the clips and rinse with lukewarm water, allowing the water to flow down the hair.

  3. Apply Foxy Hair Shampoo, gently smoothing it through the lengths without rubbing or twisting.

  4. Rinse thoroughly.

  5. Apply Foxy Hair Conditioner through the lengths, avoiding the clip mechanisms.

  6. Rinse and gently squeeze away excess water.

  7. Pat dry with a towel and carefully detangle.

  8. Apply heat protectant before blow-drying or using any heated styling tools.

  9. Dry thoroughly, directing airflow downwards.

  10. Once completely dry, store your extensions neatly with the clips closed.

A Foxy Hair Hanger can make washing, drying and styling your clip-in extensions easier.

Avoid sleeping or swimming while wearing clip-in extensions.

Recommended Aftercare Products

  • Colour fading or unwanted discolouration.

  • Reduced overall lifespan.

Your stylist will recommend the products most appropriate for your hair and extension method.
